ANCIENT COINS

001.  Punch-marked Coins, Gandhara Janapada, 6th century BC, Silver, Bent Bar, Shatamana, 11.0 g, 49x11 mm (Rajgor 2001, Series 35). Double symbol type, broad flan, slightly defaced, Very Fine+, Rare in this flan.

Estimate: Rs. 3,000-3,500



 

002.  Punch-marked Coins, Gandhara Janapada, 6th century BC, Silver, Bent Bar, Shatamana, 11.3 g, 40x9 mm (Rajgor 2001, Series 35). Double symbol type, narrow flan, a nice bent for the Bent Bar. Cleaned, Very Fine+, Rare.

Estimate: Rs. 2,500-3,000



 

003.  Punch-marked Coins, Gandhara Janapada, 6th century BC, Silver, Bent Bar, Shatamana, 11.3 g, 39x9 mm (Rajgor 2001, Series 35). Double symbol type, narrow and dumpy flan, shroff’s marks. Cleaned, Very Fine+, Rare.

Estimate: Rs. 2,500-3,000



 

004.  Punch-marked Coins, Magadha Janapada, 6th century BC, Silver, 4.3 g, Vimashatika, four symbol type with sun, star, elephant to right and decorated Nandiapada. Uncleaned, Very Fine+, Unpublished, Extremely Rare.

Estimate: Rs. 10,000-12,000

Four symbol series of the Magadha Janapada is known only in the weight standard of 5.5 g (Rajgor# Series 10). But this is for the first time that this coin is an unpublished variety of a series that was issued between Series 10 & 11, i.e Heavy weight standard of 5.5 g and light weight standard of 3.5 g. An unusal addition in Punch-marked coins.

 

005.  Kashi Janapada, Silver, Vimashatika, 4.4 g, the State symbol of Kashi is visible but other symbols are defaced (Rajgor# Series 58). Cleaned, Fine, Scarce.

Estimate: Rs. 6,000-6,500



 

006.  Kashi and Kosala Janapada, Silver (2), 4.6 and 4.1 g, Vimashatika (Rajgor# Series 58 & 64). Cleaned, Fine+ to About Very Fine, Scarce. (2)

Estimate: Rs. 5,000-5,500



 

007.  Kashi Janapada under Kosala Janapada, Silver (8), Vimashatika, four- symbol type (Rajgor# Series 58). Nicely struck with clear symbol impressions. Very Fine+, Rare as a lot. (8)

Estimate: Rs. 16,000-20,000



 

008.  Panchala Janapada, Silver (2), ½ Karshapana, 2.0 & 1.9 g, single symbol type with one composite symbol on obv which is nearly defaced due to heavy punching of bankers’ marks on rev (Rajgor# Series 73). Fine+, Scarce. (2)

Estimate: Rs. 6,000-6,500



 

009.  Post-Mauryan Punch-marked coins, Silver (5), Karshapana, five symbol type with one coin having an image of God Balarama, the edler brother of Lord Krishmna, wielding plough in his left hand. Fine to Very Fine. (5)

Estimate: Rs. 1,000-1,200



 

010.  Indo-Greeks, Apollophanus, Silver, Drachm, bust of the eking to right with circular Greek legend around on obv; Greek Goddess Athena in center with circular Kharoshthi legend on rev. Very Fine+, Very Rare.

Estimate: Rs. 5,000-6,000



 

011.  Ancient Narmada Valley, Hathodaka, Copper, 2nd century BC, 6.2 g, tree-in-railing in center with Brahmi legend, hathodaka around on obv, Uniface. Very Fine for the type, Rare.

Estimate: Rs. 2,800-3,000

012.  Hiranyakas, 1st century BC, Lead, 11.7 g, Horse type with a horse standing to right, an earth-like pot below its mouth and a Shrivatsa above its back, traces of Brahmi legend on left, the rev is defaced. Very Fine for the type, Scarce.

Estimate: Rs. 2,000-2,500



 

013.  Guptas, Samudragupta (AD 335-380), Gold, Stater, Standard type, Goddess Lakshmi seated on a throne with double struck impression (Mitch# 4777). Broad flan, Very Fine, Scarce

Estimate: Rs. 18,000-20,000



 

014.  Guptas, Chandragupta II, Gold, Stater, Archer type, with beautiful smiling face of the Emperor on obv ; Lakshmi seated on lotus with right hand extended as if scattering coins. Very Fine, Rare

Estimate: Rs. 14,000-16,000



 

015.  Guptas, Kumaragupta I, Gold, Stater, Horseman type, king mounted on a horse to left on obv ; Goddess Lakshmi seated to left with a lotus in left hand on rev. About Very Fine, Rare

Estimate: Rs. 35,000-38,000



 

016.  Sarabhapurias of Mahakosala, Prasannamitra (5-6th centuries AD), Gold, Repousse, bracteate coin, 1.3 g; Garuda facing front between Shankha and Chakra, Brahmi legend below on obv ; Uniface. Uncleaned, Very Fine+, Very rare.

Estimate: Rs. 12,000-14,000
